Classroom vs practical — by grade
Instructional time shifts deliberately from foundation in the early grades to applied mastery in the senior grades. Percentages below describe instructional application time only — formal testing is excluded (unit tests, exams, standardized assessments, and similar evaluation blocks are scheduled separately and are not folded into these ratios).
Grade 1
~75% class
~25% practical. Literacy, numeracy, and social foundations come first. Short, guided applied blocks build habits safely.
Grade 12
~25% class
~75% practical. Seminars and coaching still matter, but most time is applied labs, field blocks, leadership, and real-context problem-solving.
How to read this: ratios are design targets for a normal instructional week once the boarding academy is fully operational. Early grades protect cognitive load and safety with more structured classroom time. Senior grades reverse the balance so graduates leave with practiced competence — not only notes. Exact daily schedules vary by house, program, and season (camps, field days, exam weeks).

Practical training focus

“Practical” at Moehnke means supervised, progressive, real-context skill — fitness, self-defence, outdoor competence, teamwork, and emotional regulation — always age-appropriate and never combat training for war. Military-style structure teaches standards and accountability. We are not affiliated with any military.

Entrusting a child to a Defence School model is a serious decision. We design for transparency, safety, and measurable growth — so you can see the plan before you commit. We refuse isolation boarding: no unvetted staff, no locked-out parents.
Safety first
Only vetted, accredited teachers and an accredited Principal. Age-banded activities, published facility rules, and emergency pathways (911 first). Practical never means unsupervised risk. We take swift action on any bad actor.
You can see the room
Every class has Parent Portal live class view. Contact is fully transparent at any out-of-class time. Families see schedules and progress — not a black box of “trust us.”

We publish the classroom-to-practical ramp so you know early grades protect learning foundations and senior years emphasize applied mastery — with testing time separate.
Family culture
Military-style structure with a civilian, family mission. Independent of any armed forces. House communities, clear conduct, and adult mentorship — not intimidation.
